Binding estimate

Quilt Binding Size Chart

Quilt binding is the fabric strip that finishes the outside edges of a quilt. Use this chart as a beginner planning guide before cutting binding strips.

Quick Binding Formula

For beginner planning, use this simple formula:

Binding length = quilt width + quilt width + quilt length + quilt length + 20"

The binding length already includes +20" for corners and joining. Binding fabric yardage is still a base estimate and does not include a separate 5-10% buffer unless stated.

Quick estimator

Estimate Binding Length and Fabric

Enter the finished quilt size and strip width. This estimate uses straight-grain binding.

Straight-Grain Binding vs. Bias Binding

Straight-grain binding works well for many quilts with straight edges. Bias binding can stretch more, which is helpful for curved edges, scalloped edges, or special projects. This chart and estimator use straight-grain binding.

Assumptions

  • Binding strip width: 2.5"
  • Usable fabric width: about 40"
  • Binding length includes 20" extra
  • Displayed fabric yardage is a base planning estimate rounded up to the nearest 0.25 yard
  • The optional 5-10% shopping buffer is separate unless stated
  • Estimates are for planning only

How Calculated

Binding length = quilt perimeter + 20 inches.

Strip count = binding length divided by usable fabric width, rounded up.

Fabric estimate = strip count multiplied by strip width, rounded up for shopping.

Optional 5-10% extra is a separate shopping buffer, not included in the base fabric estimate.

FAQ

How do I calculate quilt binding length?

Add the quilt width twice, add the quilt length twice, then add about 20" extra for joining and corners.

How much binding do I need for a 50" x 60" throw quilt?

A 50" x 60" throw quilt needs about 240 inches of binding for beginner planning.

How many 2.5" strips do I need for a throw quilt?

For a 50" x 60" throw quilt, you usually need about 6 strips if your usable fabric width is about 40".

Can this chart replace my pattern instructions?

No. This chart gives beginner planning estimates. Always check your pattern before cutting binding fabric.
