Backing estimate

Quilt Backing Size Chart

Quilt backing is the fabric on the back of your quilt. It needs to be larger than the quilt top so there is extra fabric for basting, quilting, and trimming.

Quick Backing Rule

For a 50" x 60" throw quilt, a beginner backing cut size is about 58" x 68". If you use a longarm quilter, ask how much extra backing they require.

Base estimate first. If you want extra margin, consider buying 5-10% extra backing fabric after checking your budget and fabric availability.

Regular Backing vs. Wide Backing

Regular quilting cotton is often about 42" to 44" wide before trimming selvages. For planning, this page uses about 40" usable width.

Wide backing fabric is often about 108" wide before trimming. For planning, this page uses about 104" usable width. For larger quilts, wide backing can reduce seams and make planning easier.

If the backing cut size is wider than your usable fabric width, regular quilting cotton will usually need a pieced backing. That is normal, but beginners should plan the seam before buying fabric.

Assumptions

  • Regular quilting cotton usable width: about 40"
  • Wide backing usable width: about 104"
  • Backing cut size includes 4" extra on each side
  • Displayed yardage is a base planning estimate rounded up to the nearest 0.25 yard
  • The optional 5-10% shopping buffer is separate unless stated
  • Estimates are for planning only

How Calculated

Backing width = finished quilt width + 8".

Backing length = finished quilt length + 8".

Regular cotton estimates use about 40 inches of usable fabric width.

Wide backing estimates use about 104 inches of usable fabric width.

Optional 5-10% extra is a separate shopping buffer, not included in the base estimate.

FAQ

How much bigger should quilt backing be?

For beginner planning, many quilters add about 4" extra on each side. If you use a longarm quilter, ask for their specific backing requirements.

What size backing do I need for a 50" x 60" throw quilt?

Using 4" extra on each side, a 50" x 60" throw quilt needs a backing cut size around 58" x 68".

Can I use regular quilting cotton for backing?

Yes, but larger quilts may need pieced backing because regular quilting cotton is usually not wide enough for the whole backing in one piece.

Can this chart replace my pattern instructions?

No. This chart gives beginner planning estimates. Always check your pattern and fabric width before cutting.
