How This Calculator Works

It plans simple whole-square grids only. Use the pack mode to compare compact layouts, or enter a target to see the whole-square quilt top and pack count needed.

View assumptions
  • Each 5" cut square finishes at 4½" with ¼" seams.
  • Pack counts are editable; 42 squares is a common default, not a universal pack size.
  • This tool does not include sashing, borders, pattern-specific waste, or fabric yardage.
  • Results are planning estimates. Consider keeping a few extra squares for testing or mistakes.

FAQ

Many Charm Packs contain 42 five-inch squares, but the count can vary. This calculator lets you enter the number printed on your pack.

With a standard quarter-inch seam on each side, a 5-inch cut square finishes at 4½ inches in the quilt top.

The calculator uses whole 4½-inch squares. It rounds rows and columns up so the finished top meets or exceeds the size you asked for.
